Dillingham Police Department
The Dillingham Police Department was formed in 1971 when Dillingham became a first-class city. In the beginning there was just one full-time officer.
The City of Dillingham has a year round resident population of approximately 2300 people and a transient population adding between 5000 and 8000 people to the local population during the peak fisheries months from May through August. The Dillingham Police Department Dispatch Center is the public safety answering point for the northern Bristol Bay and 38 surrounding communities. In addition to dispatching police patrol officers the Dispatch Center handles communications for the Dillingham Volunteer Fire Department & Emergency Medical Services, the Dillingham Harbor staff, and the Dilingham Post of the Alaska State Troopers/Fish & Wildlife Protection.
The Dillingham Police Department's patrol staff is composed of a patrol sergeant and six full-time APSC certified police officers. Each police officer is assigned and develops unique areas of expertise in addition to his or her general patrol and investigation duties. Most officers have a "Special Police Commission" issued by the State of Alaska, Commissioner of the Department Public Safety, which empowers Dillingham police officers with arrest authority outside the Dillingham city limits when assisting, or acting on behalf of, the Alaska State Troopers.
The Dillingham Police Department is the only law enforcement organization fully staffed and operating on a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week basis between the 59th and 63rd parallels, to the north and south, and between Anchorage and Bethel, AK, or an area roughly the size of the states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut combined.
The Dillingham Department of Public Safety also operates a State of Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles office within the Public Safety building, located on D Street. This office is a full-service DMV office and is open Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., closed holidays.

The Dillingham Correctional Center is a fully staffed short term"Community Correctional Center" funded by the State of Alaska Department of Corrections and maintained by the Dillingham Department of Public Safety. The Corrections Center maintains eight beds in four cells; three cells for misdemeanor cases and one felony cell. Two other unfurnished cells provide temporary housing for public inebriates found to not be amenable for housing at the regional hospital until they regain their sobriety and/or as temporary holding cells for violent offenders. The Corrections Center services the Dillingham Department of Public Safety patrol staff, the Alaska State Trooper Dillingham Post and regional Village Public Safety Officers (VPSOs) as well as the Superior and District Courts of the State of Alaska, Third Judicial District, at Dillingham.
The Dillingham Correctional Center processes approximately 600 adult criminal custodies per year and averages about 2300 man-days of jail time each year. The Dillingham Correctional Center operated at approximately 97% of capacity last year. The Dillingham Correctional Center has a staff of five full-time correctional officers and is the only full service corrections center between Anchorage and Bethel, AK.
