Dillingham Police Department
The Dillingham Police Department was formed in 1971 when Dillingham became a first-class city. In the beginning there was just one full-time officer.
The City of Dillingham has a year round resident population of approximately 2300 people and a transient population adding between 5000 and 8000 people to the local population during the peak fisheries months from May through August. The Dillingham Police Department Dispatch Center is the public safety answering point for the northern Bristol Bay and 38 surrounding communities. In addition to dispatching police patrol officers the Dispatch Center handles communications for the Dillingham Volunteer Fire Department & Emergency Medical Services, the Dillingham Harbor staff, and the Dilingham Post of the Alaska State Troopers/Fish & Wildlife Protection.
The Dillingham Police Department's patrol staff is composed of a patrol sergeant and six full-time APSC certified police officers. Each police officer is assigned and develops unique areas of expertise in addition to his or her general patrol and investigation duties. Most officers have a "Special Police Commission" issued by the State of Alaska, Commissioner of the Department Public Safety, which empowers Dillingham police officers with arrest authority outside the Dillingham city limits when assisting, or acting on behalf of, the Alaska State Troopers.
The Dillingham Police Department is the only law enforcement organization fully staffed and operating on a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week basis between the 59th and 63rd parallels, to the north and south, and between Anchorage and Bethel, AK, or an area roughly the size of the states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut combined.
The Dillingham Department of Public Safety also operates a State of Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles office within the Public Safety building, located on D Street. This office is a full-service DMV office and is open Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., closed holidays.

The Division of Motor Vehicles located at the Dillingham Public Safety Building, titles and registers motor vehicles and trailers. Snow vehicles, powered and non-powered boats, and road safe skiff/boat trailers and All Terrain Vehicles may also be registered. The Division issues Driver licenses including Commercial and Motorcycle, or Instruction permits to those qualified. Identification Cards are also available. Road tests are given by appointment only.
Dillingham Division of Motor Vehicles does NOT charge the $10.00 service fee for walk-in vehicle registrations as stated on the back of the registration cards. If vehicle registrations are taken care of locally, the City of Dillingham receives a revenue percentage. For vehicle registrations that are mailed out or done online, there will be no revenue percentage generated. The mail-out forms are the easiest transacted locally, only takes a minute and the city benefits.
Division of Motor Vehicles would like to remind everyone owning a vehicle or having thoughts of purchasing a vehicle, there must be a title for each vehicle you own and a new owner must receive a signed title from the previous owner. When the title is received, it must be brought into DMV for transfer within 30 days from the date of sale. Again, do not buy a vehicle without a signed title and you may not sell a vehicle unless you have first obtained a Certificate of title in your name. The cost to transfer a title or duplicate in case of loss is $15.00.
